On February 14, 2025, Ikhala TVET College proudly held a ceremony to inaugurate its Student Representative Council (SRC) for the year. The event, which took place at the Queenstown Campus Hall, was filled with hope and determination, marking a significant milestone in the college’s mission to empower students in their academic journeys and campus life.
Advocate Mgaleli delivered a keynote address outlining the framework for the new SRC. He referred to the Bill of Rights and the Continuing Education and Training Act (CET Act) of 2006, as amended, which govern the SRC’s establishment, composition, election processes, terms of office, functions, and privileges. He stressed the importance of the SRC working in consultation with students while adhering to college policies set forth by the Education MEC. “In two weeks, we’ll have a training and induction program for the SRC members to ensure they are well-prepared for their responsibilities,” he announced. During his address, he presented compelling statistics from TVETMIS that highlighted student populations across various campuses:

– Aliwal North Campus: 1,404 students
– Ezibeleni Campus: 1,218 students
– Queen Nonesi Campus: 633 students
– Queenstown Campus: 1,305 students
– Sterkspruit Campus: 710 students
These statistics serve as a vital reminder for the SRC to ensure that all student voices are represented, and that each student has a delegate advocating on their behalf.
Principal Mr. Tembelihle Ntlangano encouraged the newly elected SRC members to embrace their roles as ambassadors for the college. “You are here to serve the interests of the students. Develop a budget plan that positively impacts student life,” he urged. He underscored the importance of integrity and service, reminding them, “You are brand ambassadors; serve with integrity.” Mr. Ntlangano emphasized that SRC members would be held accountable for their actions and decisions, reinforcing the need for them to accept their responsibilities fully.

Former SRC President, Predio Funani, offered valuable advice to the new council, stating, “Prepare for the challenges ahead and cultivate strong relationships among yourselves. Speak with one voice and unite to advance the vision of Ikhala.” He reflected on his own experiences, sharing lessons learned and successes that would inspire the 2025 SRC to welcome challenges as opportunities for personal growth.

Ikhala TVET College Council Member Mr. Zola Ndodana stressed the importance of adhering to laws and policies in their governance. He highlighted the need for SRC members to be steadfast in their duties, ensuring effective service to their peers within the legal framework established by the CET Act and college policies. Adv. Mgaleli concluded the ceremony by inspiring the new council members: “Serve with honour, respect, and love for your fellow students. Your roles come with significant responsibility, and you could create meaningful change in your community.”

As the 2025 SRC embarks on this new chapter, the expectations are high, but their dedication to serving, leading, and representing the student body at Ikhala TVET College remains strong. With the right training and guidance, the council is ready to nurture a spirit of collaboration and ensure every student’s voice is heard, building upon the legacy established by their predecessors.
The college community eagerly anticipates the positive impact of the SRC in the year ahead, as they strive to illuminate the path forward for Ikhala TVET College.
